Experience is the best teacher...

On this page we wish to include some information on what type of equipment can be used for research and investigations.  By no means is this everything you have to bring, you may want more or less.  These tools are what we use in our own investigations.

 You and someone else--The reason that you should not go alone is obvious.  IT'S DANGEROUS!  I don't suggest that anyone do anything alone in a place that they are unfamiliar with, especially in the dark.  Another reason is for equipment usage, one person will not be able to run all the equipment (unless you are octopus man).  It is also good to have several different mindsets, and if something is seen, wouldn't you rather have more than one person to see it!  The idea is alot like having at least 2 pieces of each equipment, you can "compare".  I f you have more than one investigator see something you can now compare what they each saw, giving you a better idea of whether it was a false positive or something paranormal.

Knowledge of location--This means that you should do some research on your site.  Have there been witness reports of happenings there?  Have you spoken to them?  What is the history of the site?  Any information you can get on a site can help you with your investigations and what to look for when there.

Proper Clothing--Of course you want to wear outfits that are suitable to the environment you are in.  Try and not to wear clothing that has reflective items on them.  Nothing that will make a lot of sound (like clinking keys and such, these may appear as EVP on recorders and cause FP's).  Also nothing with straps or hanging material that could get in the way of using your video equipment.

Pen & paper or environmental and investigation logs--This is so you can record information necessary for your reports.   You will want to right down information about the site, perhaps make a map.  It would also be a good idea to ask the home/property owner if they have a floor plan or porperty layout already.  This is also to write down any notes team members feel are necessary.  It is very important to take note of the time while on an investigation, along with feelings or phenomena witnessed.    V.T.P.R has a paranormal paperwork CD that makes this process a breeze!  We currently use the following paperwork:

* Investigation Request Letter

* Protocol for Investigation

* Protocol For Data Review

* Investigation Interview Questionairre

* Confidentiality Agreement

* Release of Information & Evidence

* Waiver of Liability (property owner & investigators)

* Indoor & Outdoor Investigation Logs

* Full Investigation Report

Baby Powder or Talc--This is an optional piece of equipment.  You may also want to use carpet deoderizer, this can easily be cleaned up on site. Alot of researchers use this when items have been known to be moved in the location. Also if there seems to be such sounds has footsteps heard in a certain area or manifestation.  The basic idea is that you put the baby powder or talc around and/or on the objects that have been known to be moved.  This will let you know if it has been moved or touched.  The same concept is for places where footsteps have been heard, or perhaps a manifestation has been seen.  Perhaps, you will find footprints in the powder!  This is a tricky tool though, because it is hard to prove that they are paranormal footsteps and not something made up.  A video camera set up to watch this area would be a good idea!

 Barometer--The idea behind this is that paranormal activity causes changes in the atmosphere around it.  Causing the barometric pressure of the area to go either up or down.  It is also good to know what this condition is at the site, there for being able to compare any changes in this on site.

 Indoor/Outdoor thermometer--This is a great piece of equipment that is not expensive.  You can pick one of these up at almost any store.  This allows you to get the ambient temperature of an area or room.  When you know what the temperature in a room is, it makes it easier to find cold/hot spots, since you now have a base temperature reading.  Why would you want to know this??  You can read about cold/hot spots on our paranormal information page.

Watches--Everyone on the team should have one of these.  Preferably with and illuminated face, since most investigations are done at night.  It is also important for the group to synchronize these watches during pre-investigation set-up.  This is to make record keeping more efficient.  It is hard to write up a report on phenomena when everyone has a different time they are going by.  It wil make your records inaccurate.  This may sound silly but think about it this way, let's say you get a EMF reading at 9:02 that lasted for 10 seconds and someone else says it is 9:05 and you put this in your  report.  Your report would now say that you got a anomoulous reading at 9:02-9:05, which would be inaccurate.  This is the purpose behind sychronized time.

Compass--This equpment is good so you know what direction you are going in, or what side of the room or area you took readings in/at.  It can also be used like the EMF meter.  It has been known that  paranormal phenomena can alter the accuracy of a compass, so if you are pointing north and the compass needle moves to east and back to north, (or whatever direction) you mave have paranormal phenomena in that area.

Batteries--Lots and lots of extra batteries.  The reason for this seems to be that paranormal phenomena seems to drain and/or absorb the energy stored in batteries.  This is the same concept as a ghost absorbing the ambient heat energy or light energy, even emotional energy that the group gives off.  So be sure to keep extra batteries for your investigation.  It is even  a good idea to not take all of them on site with you.  Leave some in the vehicle you came in, perhaps those will not be drained as the ones you carry with you can be.

IR (infrared) thermometer --This is the thermometer that will be used for finding cold spots or hot spots.  Most IR thermometers will give you a constant read out of temperature.  Many have a backlit display as well.  This will allow you to "track" the movement of the spots.  (This is used in combination of the other equipment.  If you are getting a positive read out on your EMF meter it would be a good idea to take a temperature reading of that area as well, to see if the two have correlating information.)

EMF meter--This is also known as a gaussmeter.  Meters can range from affordable to extremely high priced.  It is up to you to decide which best fits your needs.  There are MANY different types of  meters as well, from digital read out to ones that have a scale.  Others may have LED lights and sound.  This is also up to you to decide which fits your needs best.  I would like to make a note here on EMF meter positive readings.   Some researchers believe that a reading of 2-7 MG is a positive paranormal reading.  We at V.T.P.R. believe that there is no "range" that makes it paranormal.  What we have noticed in our research is that a normal reading will stay constant, while a paranormal reading will fluctuate.  These fluctuations may be small, high, or both but they almost always are fluctuating.  For more information on EMF please look at our paranormal information page.

 35 mm camera, polaroid or digital camera--This is really a choice you must make for yourself.  Some people swear by 35 mm and others digital.  The reason for this is some people feel that the negative of a 35 mm is the only way to authenticate your photos.  Others feel that digital create's false orbs in photos, and that is why people tend to get more positive photos off them. Sony Technical Department has stated that the orbs and ectoplasm is NOT caused by a camera defect!   We at V.T.P.R. believe that ALL are great for investigations.   We also feel that digital photography is the future of paranormal investigating.  For one, digital saves you money on processing photos and buying film.  You should invest in a memory disk for your camera that can hold a LOT of photos and is at least 3MP or higher.  Another reason is you can instantly see photos on the LCD screen, which allows you to "follow" anomolies.  It is also possible to have a "negative" of your digital picture to authenticate it and show no image altering has been done.  This is done with and EXIF file retriever. (look for links to some on our links page.)  Digital is also a media that is very simple to use with your computer system, allowing you to upload images easily for review.  Digital cameras are also able to see light in the IR/UV spectrum, where as most 35 mm cameras cannot.  It has been hypothesized that this is the reason digital cameras photograph more anomolies, because they are in this spectrum.

 Film--If you are using a 35 mm camera you will always want new film.  Never use a 1/2 used roll or old film.  When purchasing check the date of the film.  Also use 400 speed or higher.  We also suggest using film from differnet companies.  The reason for this is so that if you have an anomoly on one camera with one type of film and the same anomoly on the other camera with a differnt type of film, you can now rule out that it may be a problem with the film you used.  You may use color film, black and white film, or even IR film (this is expensive and extremely sensitive).

Video camera--There are many reasons why a video camera is used during investigations.  Mainly, unlike the still photography from a camera, this will allow you to  capture moving anomolies on film.  You may want to either use regular vhs tape, digital video camera, DVD or even 8 mm has been used.  This is up to you, all have been known to get results.   It is also good too have 2 of these, allowing you to identify false positives on film easier.  It is to have a camera with night shot capabilities.  When using a video camera with a standard light source it will reflect the dust and moisture in the air causing LOTS of fals positives.  Using a video camera on investigation sites is an excellent way to get the layout of your site for making maps of it later.  It sometimes even picks of EVP/ITC recordings.  We at V.T.P.R. do not use the video camera while doing our equipment readings, finding that the moving of the camera tends to make the picture shaky and harder to point out false positives on the film.  We do however use it to make a general video of the site and use it during our formal EVP recordings.  During the latter we have the camera stationary and use the light from the video camera.  We also cover the video camera light with red cellpohane as to cut down on its brightness and reflectiveness.

Tape recorder/Digital recorder--This is a researchers best friend!  Wether you use analog or digital is up to you.  Digital is easier however to upload into a computer for further analysis.  You may want to download an audio program that can filter out and pick out sound from the infrasonic/ultrasonic range.  Whichever way you go be sure to use an external microphone.  Parabolic microphones work very well.  This is so you can cut out the sound of the machines inner mechanisms while recording.  Recorders help you take notes on site, and record all your data without making you stop to write it down.  It is also helpful in letting the investigators say whether they feel they are sensing something.   It is also a wonderful tool for capturing EVP/ITC recordings.  It is a good idea to have all investigators speak into the recorders, so you later have their voice's on tape for comparison to any EVP/ITC.  Be sure to alwasy use a NEW tape that has not been opened.  You may also want to consider using white noise for formal EVP/ITC sessions.  When on site and using this equipment DO NOT WHISPER, this is easily confused for EVP/ITC.

White noise--This is used for EVP ( electronic voice phenomena) also known as ITC (instrumental transcommunication).  Voices from beyond can easily be recorded using a regular cassette tape recorder with an external microphone. The discovery was made in 1959 by Friederich Jurgenson, a Sweedish researcher, and it started a wave of interest in this field. Jurgenson was using a common tape recorder to record bird songs when he discovered mysterious voices in the recordings. Mixed with the backgorund sound, the wind shaking the leaves in the trees, it was possible to hear the conversations of people who were not visible in the place where the recordings were made. After Jurgenson's discovery, many other researchers began to experiment, trying to pick up voices from beyond. The most important of these researchers was Dr. Konstantine Raudive. He died in 1974 but left a number of works aimed at convincing humans that contact between the dead and the living is possible. Dr. Raudive applied the principal of stochastic resonance to his research. The basic idea is that background noise acts as a carrier and can be manipulated by any other signals present in free space. Without background noise, these signals, (voices of the dead), are too weak to be detectable, but in the presence of a noise (white noise) their levels increase beyond the threashold of detection and become clear...sometimes even loud. White noise can also be described as a signal with no definite frequency.

Motion sensors--The general idea behind this is that with a motion sensor it is possible to detect movement in an otherwise empty room.  These may be used to either detect a ghost 's movement or movement of items (like a ball in the middle of the room).  Some researchers use motion sensors, wind chimes or both.  These are a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment.  We at V.T.P.R. use these after we have done several readings of the site.  We decide what areas we consider "active" and place them there.

 Flash lights--Most investigations are done on sites at night.  Therefore some way of seeing is necessary.  This is not to say that ghosts only come out at night.  They are all around us all the time, but the Earth is at its most calm and quiet at this time.  This of course aides in your research.  The busy road during the day is not busy, the neighbors dog is not barking but asleep and so are the children next door.  This allows for your EVP/ITC recordings to be cleaner, removing much of the background noise that would be there during the day.  We at V.T.P.R. use flash lights with red lenses (you may also use red cellpohane over the lense), for the same reasons we use it on the video camra light.

ID--You should NEVER go on any investigation without proper photo ID.  This is not only professional but a good idea.  If the police or other authority's would happen to show up, it is alwasys a good idea to be able to show who you are and what you are doing there.  It also tends to make the people you are investigating for feel more secure about you being there.  I personally wouldn't want someone without ID to be on my property or in my house!  All V.T.P.R. members are required to have proper photo ID with them while on investigations, along with there membership and investigator photo ID.

Control Objects-- What is this?  Simply put they are objects that are placed specifically for a "sign of presence" by the spirits.  They can be almost any object that you wish them to be.  We at VTPR use two different types of control objects.  The first set is a set of 12 laminated cards with a scanned image of the control object printed on them.  For the first set we use 12 identical buttons.  The second set is basically the exact same thing except we use coins instead.  We use two sets simply to see if we get better results from one set to the next.

How do we set this up?  Basically we decide what spots we consider to be "hot spots"  or areas in which we have been told the most activity occurs.  We then place our control objects in those areas.  After placing them we then seal off those areas to EVERYONE!  This can be as simple as locking the doors or putting a tape seal on them.  We then ask the spirits to give us a sign of their presence by moving any of the contact objects.  You may repeat this request several times, especially when doing your formal EVP sessions.  It is best to have at least two team members do this to verify the beginning and ending positions of the objects.  We also find it a good idea to place them in the room within camera view.

Video Equipment-- Video is very important in an investigation.  Not only does it allow you to hopefully catch anomolies on film, but it can be quite helpful in identifying noises and other types of phenomena as false positives.  For example:  We had an investigation in which we collected 3 EVPS.  The first EVP we found was while our lead investigator was doing a formal EVP session.  He had noted on the recording that he was placing the recorder in the bedroom, after which we heard a low voice say "Put it where?".  We were excited about the EVP but also cautious. After reviewing it several times we came to the conclusion that it had sounded somewhat like one of our members.  We then went back through our investigation video and found that it was one of our investigators actually saying "cram it where?".  So if it were not for the video, we would not have been able to verify that EVP as being a false positive.   There are many differnt ways to do video on an investigation.  We have already mentioned the use of a video camera below are components for night vision cameras.

CCTV Monitor or Small TV--The CCTV monitor will alow you to view multiple camera views on one screen.  Some CCTV monitors are already set up to directly accept up to 4 cameras, others require that you have a splitter or processor to do this.  You may use either color or black & white, this is also up to the individual.  I would like to note though that since most investigations are done at night, that night vision cameras are usually used.  When you are viewing night vision it is a monochrome (pretty much black and white) picture.  That is something to consider when purchasing the monitor since they come in both color and black and white, the latter usually being cheaper.  It is also quite cost effective to purchase small A/V televisions.  We recently found that we could purchase small 5.5" B&W TV monitors with A/V connections for about $15.00 each.

DVR(DVD)/VCR--This equipment is obvious.  It allows you to record your video.  Depending on wether or not you wish to download your video to a PC for further review, you can either use digital (DVR/DVD) or analog (VCR).  There are also PC cards that you can buy to download analog video to your PC.  Note:  you can use a regular VCR for recording, but it will not last as long as a security VCR which is ment for this process.  We currently use DVD recorders for our NV cameras.

Night Vision Cameras--You can either use wired or wireless cameras for this set up.  We suggest that your cameras be night vision, i f you feel the picture is not bright enough simply purchase an IR illuminator to use next to the camera.

Plug In Jack 2

Power Inverter-Very simply put a power inverter allows you to use the power/energy of a car battery for your equipment.  It turns the DC power into AC power.  These are available in any car parts store even walmart carries them.  The more wattage of the power inverter the more expensive it will be.

How do you use the power inverter?  This is quite simple as well.  Simply take a charged car battery and attach the "jumper cables" that come with the inverter, this then attaches to the inverter, usually through a "cigarette lighter" socket.  The LED light on the inverter should now be visible.  Simply plug your equipment into the power inverter.  You can now easily investigate places that have no electricity for equipment plug ins!

Here is a list of wattage for some general pieces of equipment:
-Laptop  120w-300w
-13" TV  70w
-8" TV  45w
-VCR  45W
-Digital camera  30w
-Camcorder  30w

Divining/Dowsing Rods--  A divining rod (also known as dowsing rod) is an apparatus used in dowsing. There are many types of divining rods:
  • two brass "L" shaped wire rods (commonly made of brazing or welding rod, but glass or plastic also work) that are to be held one in each hand. When something is found they cross over one another making an "X" over the found object. Brass is often used to prevent interference due to the Earth's magnetic field.
  • A forked (or "Y" shaped) willow branch. The two ends on the forked side are to be held one in each hand with the third pointing straight ahead. Often the branches are grasped palms down. The pointing end turns up or down when water is found. This method is sometimes known as 'Willow Witching'. Hazel tree branches were also used for this purpose; these were called virgula divina.

Expert dowsers are allegedly capable of dowsing exact depth measurements of water veins, electromagnetism, currents and telluric phenomenons. They are also capable of detecting other materials such as measuring blood toxicity, white cells, sugar levels, human illness and health. Expert dowsers are not limited to any specific time and space. Some have the ability to dowse any material at any given time from any location.

Many dowsers use simple brass rods bent in an "L" shape; others use wooden Y-rods and/or even bent wire coat hangers. According to some dowsers who use divining rods, brass allows the rod to attune to magnetic fields emanated by the target without the earth's EM field interfering, as would be the case with a metal such as steel. The end of the rod to be held by the dowser is often encased in a material that provides a constant electrical impedance, to prevent the dowser's own conductivity from interfering with the dowsing process.

"Do not believe a thing because many people speak of it. Do not believe on the faith of the sages of the past. Do not believe what you yourself have imagined, persuading yourself that a God inspires you. Believe nothing on the sole authority of your masters and priests. After examination, believe what you yourself have tested and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto." -BUDDHA
